Public Emergency Shelters

When conditions warrant, Canton's Emergency Management Team may establish community-based shelters where residents can seek refuge, as well as to sleep and eat. The three Fire Stations would be used for small emergencies and Canton Community Center would be used in large disasters.

What can I bring?

The Department of Senior & Social Services, assisted by the Canton Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) and the Connecticut chapter of the American Red Cross, staffs and operates the shelters. Persons needing a shelter are asked to bring a change of clothing, bathing and sanitary supplies, pre-filled prescription and other medical needs, denture and eye care materials, and special dietary supplies or requirements. With the exception of guide dogs, pets are not permitted in the shelters. Pet sheltering will be housed at Canton Intermediate School. Consider going to a friend’s or relative’s house before going to a shelter.
