Capt. John Brown House, 37 West Road

Next  Canton Center List

Built in 1776 by Captain John Brown, the house has a large central chimney with three fireplaces.  Brown fought in the Revolution.  A gravestone stood in the lot across the street until his grandson, abolitionist John Brown of Harpers Ferry fame, moved it to his farm in North Elba, New York.  After his execution, the younger Brown was buried on the New York farm and his grave is marked by the same stone.  Captain Brown has a monument in the Canton Center Cemetery.
